Perimeter Calculator

Type length and width for the distance around a rectangle. A scaled drawing labels each side, the formula updates live, and an optional allowance covers fence gaps or frame joints.

Rectangle perimeter solver

The longer pair of opposite sides, or either if the shape is a square.

The shorter pair. Swap the labels if your drawing names them the other way around.

Flat amount added to the final perimeter for a gate gap, miter waste, or seam overlap. Not multiplied per side.

The orange trace is the perimeter: one length, one width, then the same pair again on the way back.

Solving a 12 × 8 rectangle.

Perimeter is the tape measure route around the outside edge. Area is what you would paint on the floor inside. Same rectangle, two answers, and mixing them up is the most common mistake on homework sheets and job quotes alike.

Walk the rim, skip the floor

A 12 m by 8 m plot has perimeter 40 m, which is the fencing order. The area is 96 m², the sod or gravel quote. A supplier asking for square metres will not accept a perimeter figure. A fence crew will not price your job from area.

Short version: perimeter is linear, area is square.

Fence panels from a perimeter figure

Suppose a backyard rectangle measures 15 ft by 10 ft. Perimeter is 50 ft before any gate. Standard 8 ft panels cover 6.25 panels worth of run if you ignore corners. Real jobs add a gate width, overlap at posts, or a short return along the house wall.

WORKED QUOTE
Perimeter = 2 × (15 + 10) = 50 ft
Gate allowance = 4 ft (typed in the box above)Total run = 54 ft
Panels at 8 ft each → 54 / 8 = 6.75 → buy 7 panels

The allowance field on the tool adds one flat number to the perimeter total. Put the gate width there, not the panel count. Panel math still belongs on your clipboard after you copy the adjusted perimeter.

Why the formula doubles

A rectangle has two lengths and two widths. Walking the edge hits length, then width, then length again, then width again. Add once: L + W. Walk twice around the same path: 2 × (L + W).

Half-perimeter (L + W) shows up in frame shops because moulding is often priced per side pair before doubling for opposite rails. The card above prints both figures so you do not have to halve mentally.

Need area without the perimeter focus? The Area Calculator covers several flat shapes. Need all three rectangle figures in one panel? The Rectangle Calculator matches this maths with a simpler layout.

Perimeter questions mid-measurement

Formula, units, allowance, and the perimeter versus area mix-up.

What is the perimeter of a rectangle?

Add length and width, then double the sum: P = 2 × (L + W). A 10 cm by 6 cm rectangle gives 32 cm around the outside.

How is perimeter different from area?

Perimeter measures the distance around the edge in linear units. Area measures the surface inside in square units. A 5 m by 4 m room has perimeter 18 m and area 20 m².

What does the allowance field add?

One flat length added to the computed perimeter after the formula runs. Use the field for a gate opening, a seam overlap, or any fixed extra you already measured.

Does the unit selector convert between metric and imperial?

No. The dropdown only labels results. Convert your input to one system first, then enter the numbers.

Can I calculate perimeter for a square?

Yes. Enter the same value for length and width, or use the Square Calculator if you only have one side length.

Why show area and diagonal on a perimeter page?

People often paste an area figure when they meant perimeter, or vice versa. Showing both values on the same rectangle makes the mismatch obvious before you order materials.
