Math Calculators with the Working Shown

An answer on its own teaches you nothing when it disagrees with yours. The calculators here print the steps between your input and the result: the common denominator in a fraction sum, each row operation in a matrix inverse, the rule applied at each line of a derivative.

Pick a tool by branch below, or start from the problem on your worksheet. Algebra, geometry, number theory, matrices and single-variable calculus are covered, along with a shelf of fractal generators for art and class demos.

Worked example
x² - 5x + 6 = 0
  1. a = 1, b = -5, c = 6
  2. b² - 4ac = 25 - 24 = 1positive, so two real roots
  3. x = (5 ± √1) / 2
  4. x = 3 or x = 2

The Quadratic Formula Calculator prints the discriminant before the roots, so you know whether to expect two answers, one, or a complex pair.

Start from the problem, not the tool name

Textbooks rarely say "use the combination calculator". Find a line below shaped like your question, open the tool beside it, and compare against the answer shown.

All 94 math tools, sorted by branch

Grouped the way a syllabus is, from arithmetic up to linear algebra. Type a word such as "prime", "matrix" or "triangle" to narrow the list.

Fractions, ratios and everyday arithmetic

Fraction work, proportions, powers, roots, logs and rounding. The rule of three pair splits direct from inverse proportion, which is where most word-problem mistakes start.

Equations and algebra

Linear equations, systems, quadratics and complex numbers. Equations with no solution, or infinitely many, get named as such instead of returning a blank box.

Geometry and measurement

Shapes, distances and coordinates. The geometry tools put your own numbers into the formula on screen, so a wrong answer usually traces back to a wrong measurement.

Primes, divisors and number systems

Factors, primes, GCD and LCM, modular arithmetic, base conversion and Roman numerals. The Euclidean visualizer draws the GCD as rectangles, which helps the method stick.

Counting, sequences and constants

Factorials, permutations, combinations, Pascal rows, Fibonacci and digit runs of pi, e and phi. Pick permutation when order matters and combination when order does not.

Matrices and vectors

Determinants, inverses, eigenvalues, dot and cross products, quaternions. The inverse calculator keeps exact fractions through every Gauss-Jordan row step, so 1/3 stays 1/3.

Calculus and graphing

Derivatives, integrals and limits for single-variable functions, plus two plotters. Use them to check homework you have already worked by hand.

Logic, sets and graphs

Truth tables and Karnaugh maps, Venn regions, shortest paths and binary search trees. Course material for discrete math and intro computer science.

Fractals and math art

Mandelbrot and Julia sets, L-systems, space-filling curves, ferns, spirals and tilings. These draw instead of solve, and every one exports a PNG from the canvas.

Where these calculators stop

Every tool here has a ceiling. Knowing the ceiling saves you from trusting a number past the point where the math holds.

Floating point rounding

Most tools compute in JavaScript numbers, which hold about 15 to 17 digits of precision. Past that, the tail is noise:

0.1 + 0.2 → 0.30000000000000004
170! → 7.257415615307994e+306
171! → Infinity

For exact answers, use the tools built on whole numbers and fractions: the Fraction Calculator, Decimal to Fraction, Matrix Inverse and Pascal Triangle.

  • Factorials end at 170! The next one overflows the largest number a browser stores, about 1.8 × 10308.
  • Pi and e digit runs cap at 1,000 digits. For a million digits, a desktop program such as y-cruncher is the right tool.
  • Roman numerals stop at 3999. Larger values need overline notation, which the classic system never standardized.
  • The sieve stops at N = 1000. Each strike gets drawn, so larger grids stop being readable. The Prime Number Calculator handles bigger ranges.
  • Factoring uses trial division. Numbers with two large prime factors slow the Factor Calculator down noticeably.
  • Matrix sizes are bounded. Inverse handles 2×2 to 5×5, determinant up to 4×4, eigenvalues 2×2 and 3×3. Bigger systems belong in NumPy or GNU Octave.
  • Calculus is single-variable. No partial derivatives or implicit differentiation. For multivariable work, use a computer algebra system such as SymPy.

Four checks before you copy an answer down

  1. Estimate first. Before you press calculate, guess the size of the answer. √50 sits a little above 7. If the screen says 70, an input went wrong.
  2. Substitute back. Put the root into the original equation. For x² − 5x + 6 = 0, x = 3 gives 9 − 15 + 6 = 0, so the root holds.
  3. Watch units. An area in cm² does not turn into m² by dividing by 100. Divide by 10,000.
  4. Round once, at the end. Rounding each intermediate step to two decimals drifts the final result. Keep full precision until the last line.

Math calculator questions

Steps, privacy, rounding and the rule of three.

Do these math calculators show the steps?

Most of them. The equation solvers, the GCD and LCM tools, matrix inverse, determinant and derivative calculators print each step on its own line. The geometry tools show the formula with your numbers substituted in. The fractal generators have no steps to show, since they draw a picture instead of solving for a value.

Are the numbers I type sent to a server?

No. Every tool on this page computes inside your browser tab with JavaScript. Nothing you type is uploaded or stored, so a test paper or a client spreadsheet stays on your machine.

Why does a calculator show 0.30000000000000004 for 0.1 + 0.2?

Browsers store decimals in binary floating point, and 0.1 has no exact binary form. The error sits around the 17th digit. Round the displayed result to the precision your problem needs. When exact values matter, use the Fraction Calculator, Decimal to Fraction or Matrix Inverse Calculator, which keep exact fractions.

Should I use the direct or the inverse rule of three?

Ask whether both quantities rise together. If 4 kg of flour costs 10 dollars, 6 kg costs 15, so price and weight move together and the direct rule applies. If 4 workers finish a job in 6 days, 8 workers need 3 days, so one goes up as the other goes down and the inverse rule applies.

Is using a math calculator for homework cheating?

Your teacher sets the rule, not the tool. The most useful habit is to work the problem by hand first, then compare your lines against the calculator steps. The first line where the two disagree is the mistake to fix.
