What each line on the card tells you

The first card on the page is Spaghetti Carbonara, and every roll after follows the same layout. Five parts are worth reading before you start chopping.

Total
Clock time from the first step to the plate, including soaking, marinating and chilling. Tiramisu shows 6 hr 30 min, since six of those hours happen in the fridge.
Hands-on
Minutes you spend at the counter or stove. Mujaddara runs an hour, and the onions need you for 45 of those minutes. Congee runs 90 minutes and needs you for 10.
Level
Easy means no technique beyond chopping and stirring. Medium means one step with a failure point, like adding egg to hot pasta. Takes practice is reserved for tamagoyaki, where rolling thin layers of egg takes a few attempts.
Serves
The portion count the quantities were written for. The minus and plus buttons rescale every amount on the card.
Cook's note
The one mistake the dish punishes most, plus a swap or warning where the diet tags need one. For carbonara: take the pan off the heat before the egg goes in.

The On the table in filter counts total time, not hands-on time. Dishes spending an hour or more in a marinade, a soak or the fridge never show up under a tight limit, even when the work is short.

Scaling a recipe up or down

Multiplying every line by the same number works for most of a recipe and breaks a few parts in predictable ways. The stepper does the arithmetic. These rules cover the rest.

How ingredients behave when you change the servings
IngredientScales cleanly?What to do
Meat, vegetables, pasta, riceYesFollow the card. Amounts round to the nearest 5 or 10 grams once scaled.
Salt, chilli, strong spicesNot past doubleAdd three quarters of the scaled amount, taste, then add the rest if needed.
Stock and water in soups and braisesRoughlyA wider pot loses more to steam. Keep a kettle of hot water ready instead of pouring the full amount in at the start.
EggsRounds to halvesBeat the eggs and pour in half of one by eye. In baking, round up and add a minute to the bake.
Anything in a frying panThe pan does notDoubling a stir-fry or smash burgers means two batches. A crowded pan steams the meat grey instead of browning the outside.
Cakes, cookies, mousseBatch, don't stretchMake two batches rather than one deep tray. Bake time changes with depth, not weight.

Scaled amounts show up in teaspoons and tablespoons to the nearest quarter. Three teaspoons or more turn into tablespoons, so 1 tsp of cumin for 4 people reads as 1 tbsp for 12.

Five dinners, one trip to the shop

Switch to Five dinners and the generator picks from the dinner recipes only. Each night gets a different cuisine and, where the filters allow, a different main ingredient, so chicken does not land three nights running. Set the servings once and every dinner scales to the same household size.

The shopping list on the right merges all five. Matching items add up, so two recipes asking for an onion each become 2 onions, and the list marks how many dinners use each line. Shared items are where a week plan saves money: one bunch of spring onions or one bag of chickpeas covers two meals instead of half a bunch wilting in the drawer.

A tight filter shrinks the week. Vegan plus 40 minutes or less leaves fewer than five dinners. The week then comes back short instead of filling the gaps with recipes outside your filter.

Diet tags, and the ingredients where they slip

Every tag on a card was checked against the ingredient list as written. Swap a brand or add a topping and the tag might stop holding. These are the usual suspects.

Parmesan, pecorino and most feta

Traditional versions set the curd with animal rennet. The risotto and Greek salad keep the vegetarian tag, but a strict vegetarian should buy a cheese labeled rennet-free.

Dashi

Standard dashi uses bonito, a smoked fish. Miso soup carries no vegetarian tag for this reason, even with tofu as the main ingredient. Kombu with dried shiitake makes a plant-only stock.

Soy sauce, miso and doubanjiang

Most soy sauce is brewed with wheat, and some miso and bean pastes contain wheat or barley. Every recipe using them stays untagged for gluten-free. Tamari is the usual swap.

Asafoetida

Ground asafoetida is almost always cut with wheat flour. The chana masala leaves the spice out so the gluten-free tag holds.

Thai curry paste

Many green and red pastes contain shrimp paste. Swap the chicken in the green curry for tofu and the dish still is not vegetarian unless the paste label says so.

Glutinous rice

No gluten, despite the name. The word refers to the glue-like texture. Mango sticky rice is vegan and gluten-free.

Allergies go beyond what four tags cover. Peanuts show up in som tam, and sesame in four dishes once you count the tahini in hummus. Read the full ingredient list before cooking for someone with an allergy.

Where this generator falls short

Recipe generator questions

Are these real recipes or made up by the generator?

Real dishes with fixed recipes. The generator picks from a fixed set of written recipes. Nothing on a card is stitched together at random, so the quantities and steps belong to the dish named at the top.

Will the same recipe come up twice?

Not while fresh recipes remain. The page remembers what you rolled during this visit and the server skips those dishes until your filter runs out. The status line tells you when repeats start.

Why does a five-dinner week sometimes show fewer than five?

Your filters matched fewer than five dinner recipes. Vegan plus 40 minutes or less is one example. Widen the time limit or drop a filter and roll again.

How do the servings work in five-dinner mode?

One servings number covers the whole week. Set the number to your household size on any card and every dinner, plus the merged shopping list, scales to match.

How do I keep a recipe?

Copy recipe puts the full card on your clipboard as plain text, and Print card prints the card alone without the rest of the page. Your roll history clears when you close the tab.

Is anything I pick sent to a server?

Only the filters and the list of recipes already shown, so the server knows what to skip. Crossed-off ingredients, servings and history stay in the page.
