You will get the Maple Leafs, then the Rangers, then somebody's own team, then the Leafs again from the person who was not listening. Whatever that is, it is not random. It is broadcast reach, recent playoff runs, and whoever spoke last.
That bias is harmless in conversation and ruinous in a draft. Two people in a fantasy pool reaching for the same marquee club is how a supposedly blind order turns into an argument. A kid picking a team to follow ends up with whichever jersey the sporting-goods shop had in stock.
So you hand the pick to something with no favourites.
Search for a random NHL team picker and a surprising number return the Arizona Coyotes. That club stopped playing after the 2023-24 season. Its hockey operation moved to Salt Lake City, spent a year as Utah Hockey Club, and took the Mammoth name for 2025-26. Any list still naming Arizona has not been touched in two seasons.
Which matters more than a spelling nit.
If you are drafting a fantasy pool or running an office bracket and the generator deals out a club nobody can roster, the draft breaks and somebody has to redo it. The list here carries the Utah Mammoth in the Central Division where the franchise slot sits, and every card flags the move in a franchise-history line so nobody has to guess what happened.
That line does honest work elsewhere too. Winnipeg's current Jets were the Atlanta Thrashers until 2011. Carolina were the Hartford Whalers. Colorado were the Quebec Nordiques, and the Dallas Stars started life in Minnesota. Hockey moves cities more than most leagues, and a bare team name hides all of it.
Stanley Cup totals run through the 2025 Final and count only what the club won under the identity it carries today, so Colorado's three exclude the Quebec years. "In the NHL since" marks the year the franchise entered the league, not the year it reached its current city. None of this is a live feed, and nothing on a card reflects standings, rosters or cap space.
The league splits into two conferences of sixteen, and each conference into two divisions of eight. That structure is the whole filter row. Leave it on All teams and every club sits in the same hat with identical odds. Drop to a conference and it is sixteen. Drop to a division and it is eight, which is a small hat that empties fast.
Which is exactly why the no-repeat switch matters. With it on, the tool shuffles your chosen pool once and deals off the top, so a club cannot reappear until every other club in that pool has had a turn. The counter under the buttons tracks how many are left before the deck starts over. Switch it off and each draw becomes independent again, the way a coin is, and the Canucks will happily come up twice in a row.
Matchup mode deals two at once and sets them either side of a centre line, the fastest way to build a hypothetical series or decide who plays whom in a pickup bracket. Bracket mode deals four.
Switching between the three sizes never reshuffles the deck.
Four divisions of exactly eight is unusually tidy for a major league, and it makes the division filters directly comparable. No pool is quietly weighted heavier than another, so an Atlantic draw and a Pacific draw carry identical odds per club.
Watch the counter between picks. It reports precisely when the deck is about to recycle, which beats finding out halfway through that somebody has been assigned Edmonton twice.
An eight-team division pool empties after eight picks. A conference lasts sixteen. If your league has twelve managers and you are drawing from the Pacific, you will hit the reshuffle before everyone has picked, so widen the filter first rather than mid-round.
Once the filters sit where you want them, R re-rolls without reaching for the mouse. Copy link preserves your filter and draw size, so sending it to the rest of the pool puts everyone on the same setup rather than the default.

Fantasy commissioners, mostly, and usually under time pressure. Draft order, keeper assignments, tiebreakers where nobody wants to be the person who chose. Draw four and you have a pod. Pair it with the random number generator when you need pick positions to go alongside the teams.
Then the bar-argument crowd. Draw two, argue about who takes a seven-game series, draw again. Matchup mode exists because people were already doing that with the old single-team version, drawing twice and holding the first result in their head.
Coaches and camp organisers assign scrimmage identities with it so the kids are not all the local team. Streamers and quiz hosts run it as a segment prompt. A fair number of new fans use it exactly once, to settle the question of who to follow, which is as good a method as inheriting a team from a parent.

The details that change how the results behave.
No, and that is deliberate. The Coyotes played their final season in 2023-24 before the operation moved to Salt Lake City. The Utah Mammoth hold that Central Division slot here, with the relocation noted on the card. Generators still handing out Arizona have stale lists.
A division holds eight clubs, not thirty-two. With no-repeat on you will still see all eight before any returns, but eight goes quickly. Widen to a conference or to all teams if you want a longer stretch before the deck recycles.
No. The shuffled deck lives in the page, so reloading, closing the tab, or changing the filter starts a fresh shuffle. For a long draft, copy the teams you have assigned before you touch the browser.
It uses the browser's built-in random number generator with a Fisher-Yates shuffle, which is uniform across the pool and more than adequate for drafts and games. It is not cryptographically seeded, so do not use it where money rides on the outcome being unpredictable to a determined party.
