Direct proportions fail fast when A uses one unit and C uses another. Keep A and C in the same unit type. Keep B and X in the same unit type.

It fails when the unit rate changes.

Do not use direct proportion when
  • Discount tiers change the price per item.
  • Speed changes over time.
  • Scaling up changes efficiency, like cooking large batches or hiring staff.
  • Values represent percentages where the base shifts.
